The Bike Train initiative is a simple yet transformative idea that’s gaining momentum in Auckland. Modeled after the walking school bus, the Bike Train allows tamariki to ride safely to school in a supervised group, led by trained adult guides. This innovative project not only encourages active transport but also builds confidence in young riders, reduces traffic congestion, and supports climate-friendly habits.

This initiative is made possible through the collective efforts of several key partners. Funding and support from Auckland Transport, the Auckland Climate Grant, and the Albert-Eden Local Board have been instrumental in turning this community-driven idea into reality. Together, these partners have enabled the purchase of essential safety equipment, provided training for volunteer guides, and facilitated outreach to local schools and families.

At schools like Waterview Primary, the Bike Train has already made a noticeable impact. Parents appreciate the peace of mind knowing their children can travel safely to school, while kids enjoy the camaraderie and sense of independence that comes with riding in a group. The initiative has also sparked interest in other neighborhoods, with more communities reaching out to learn how they can establish their own Bike Trains.

The project’s success highlights the power of collaboration between local government, community organisations, and families. By promoting active transport and fostering sustainable habits, the Bike Train is creating a healthier, more connected Auckland—one ride at a time.
