Catalyst projects and CCAN
The Tāmaki Makaurau Community Climate Action Network (CCAN) was established with council support in 2023, as local environmental groups began to see that alongside their restoration and sustainability efforts, they could bring a sharper focus on climate, and particularly on reducing emissions through community-led action.
While many groups were already advocating for stronger climate responses, they saw a need to pair this with practical, on-the-ground work to make real change. CCAN emerged to fill the gap, creating opportunities for groups to learn from each other, connect and coordinate efforts to strengthen community-based climate initiatives across the region.
Today, CCAN members focus on making climate action welcoming and accessible to everyone, through regular gatherings, speaker events, shared community spaces, and other opportunities for people to come together and take part.
Council now fund Catalyst projects with CCAN members
Catalyst Projects focus on emissions reduction and are either grounded in places or communities of belonging. That is, they’re rooted in the character, needs and strengths of a particular neighbourhood or community, and draw on local knowledge, relationships and ways of working.
