The Adaptation Game (TAG)

Start a conversation about climate adaptation.

The Adaptation Game (TAG) is an interactive workshop that helps communities explore local climate impacts, share knowledge and start planning for the future together. Whether your community is already thinking about climate impacts or just beginning the conversation, TAG provides a practical and engaging way to get started.

Why bring TAG to your community?

Climate change is already affecting communities across Tāmaki Makaurau. Preparing early gives communities more time, more options and greater confidence to respond to future challenges.

TAG helps communities:

  • understand how climate change could affect their local area
  • share local knowledge, experiences and perspectives
  • explore practical adaptation options together at both household and community levels
  • identify actions that can be taken now
  • build confidence, connections and readiness for the future

Need support to run a session?

The Adaptation Game is designed to be shared and facilitated by communities, for communities. We encourage local initiative and volunteer-led delivery wherever possible.

Where barriers exist, we may be able to provide additional support to help make a session happen. This could include advice, connections, resources or other forms of assistance.

FAQs

Do I need to like or know how to play games to be able to play?

No. The Adaptation Game is a guided conversation about climate adaptation, not a traditional board game. A facilitator can lead the workshop, and anyone interested can also access resources to learn how to facilitate a session themselves.

How long does a workshop take?

It depends on your needs. The full TAG experience typically takes 3-4 hours and provides the deepest exploration of climate adaptation. Workshops can also be adapted into shorter 1.5-2 hour sessions or introductory activities of less than an hour, depending on your goals, audience and available time.

How many people can attend?

It depends on the workshop format. Typically, TAG is played with up to four participants per table and one facilitator. For larger events, an experienced facilitator may be able to support multiple tables (typically two to five), depending on the size of the event and their level of experience.

Can we run a workshop ourselves?

Yes. Communities can borrow a TAG kit and use the facilitator resources available to run their own workshop. While no formal training is required, new facilitators should allow time to review the guide and prepare before delivering a session. Many people find it helpful to first participate in a TAG workshop or co-facilitate with an experienced facilitator. You can also choose to work with a trained facilitator.
