HONOURING
TE TIRITI O WAITANGI
Auckland Council recognises 19 iwi and hapū with whakapapa ties to the whenua and wai of Tāmaki Makaurau. We all want to create a city that reflects shared aspirations and delivers better outcomes.
Te Tiriti o Waitangi is Aotearoa’s founding document, affirming Māori rights and the Māori–Crown relationship. By upholding Te Tiriti, Auckland Council creates space for Māori to exercise tino rangatiratanga in decisions that affect them.
Mana whenua and Māori enact rangatiratanga every day, by identifying and managing risks unique to their communities. The pandemic and recent extreme weather events are just a few recent examples of Māori-led action making a real difference.
Tangata whenua in Tāmaki Makaurau provide critical climate leadership for the region. Values and concepts like mauri, mana, manaakitanga and kaitiakitanga guide our holistic approach to climate risk, connecting people and place. Climate change affects taonga Māori, including whenua, wai and marae. Under Te Tiriti, hapū have the right to protect these and maintain links to ancestral lands – even those facing climate threats.
Council is working to support marae resilience plans and create infrastructure guidance that enhances mauri. We also recognise that climate decisions must be grounded in te ao Māori. Te Puāwaitanga ō te Tātai (part of Te Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri: Auckland's Climate Plan) →
