Challenges & Opportunities
Auckland is making progress in tackling climate change, guided by Te Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri: Auckland’s Climate Plan, which aligns with the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C.
Our efforts are delivering real results for Aucklanders, and show how targeted investment can help the region adapt to extreme weather and reduce emissions at the same time.
Ongoing challenges
Despite these advances, Auckland faces ongoing challenges in reaching our climate targets. Our Long-Term Plan prioritises climate resilience, but scaling up action will need sustained investment and strong leadership from central government to align policy and funding.
In the near future, it will be necessary to decide who should pay for things like protective infrastructure, possible relocations and property buyouts.
A proactive approach to adaptation and mitigation makes economic sense. Research shows that every dollar we invest in climate action delivers significant economic benefits.
