In September 2024 a temporary mural appeared on the Waterfront’s Eastern Viaduct as part of Eke Panuku’s placemaking programming for the Waterfront. Designed by students from Bayfield Primary School in collaboration with a graphic designer, and painted onsite by Bayfield School families and Waterfront visitors, ‘Our Thriving Moana’ expresses the students’ aspirations for a thriving and healthy harbour. Having delighted visitors to the Waterfront through the summer, the nine painted panels are about to be gifted to the school, cementing a relationship facilitated by Sustainable Schools coordinator Sean Winterbottom.

This collaboration is a valuable step for Eke Panuku Placemaking toward building ongoing relationships with local schools, making tamariki voices visible in public space and giving students an experience of agency in commenting on and connecting to the future of their place. This is especially important as work begins on Te Ara Tukutuku, which will be one of the most significant public spaces for the city, growing alongside these tamariki over the coming years.
