Feeling the pinch at the pump?

Auckland Climate Action

You’re not alone.

It’s no secret that global fuel prices have dramatically increased as the Iran conflict escalates. We can’t control what’s happening overseas, but we can control how we travel.

Here are five simple ways to move through Tāmaki Makaurau with less cost, less stress, and a little more joy.

1. Swap one car ride for one bus ride

Ever heard the saying: “We’re not stuck in traffic, we are the traffic”?

One full bus can replace dozens of cars, and a full train at peak hour can replace over 900 cars. Auckland’s growing fleet of 180 electric buses is already helping clear the air and the roads.

Check out the Auckland Transport Journey Planner.

Also, did you know you can now enjoy unlimited travel on AT buses, trains and ferries for no more than $50 a week? Find out more about the 7-day fare cap here.

2. Walk or bike the short trips

Walking and cycling are first-rate climate actions and top-tier wellbeing boosters. They’re good for your body and mind, and doing them with friends or whānau is a beautiful way to connect with place. Did you know you can borrow an e-bike and try it out for two weeks FREE! Find out more here.

Also you can visit one of our 14 bike hubs across Tāmaki Makaurau to help you get on your bike and develop your skills.

3. Ready to make the switch to EV or Hybrid?

If you’re not ready or able to ditch the car entirely, switching to electric or hybrid is easier than you might think. Annual running costs for EVs can be half (or less) of petrol cars. It’s a win-win: lower costs for you, a low-carbon future for Tāmaki.

If you want to know more about making the switch to EV, visit the EECA website for more info here. Worried about range? Check out where you can charge your EV around the motu at PlugShare.

4. Connect Your Modes: Bus + Bike, Train + Walk, Ferry + Everything

The new era of transport isn’t one perfect mode; it’s mix-and-match mobility.

  • An e-bike to a train station.
  • A scoot to a ferry.
  • A walk home from the bus.

Check out the Auckland Transport website for more about how you can mix your go.

5. Holiday here in Aotearoa

Keeping holidays local is good for the planet, your wallet, and great for the local economy. Think beaches, bush, whānau, and zero time spent stressing in airport queues or worrying about flight disruption. Sometimes the most restorative break is the one right here.

We’ve got some great spots available for you to book a local holiday right here in Tāmaki Makaurau.

Auckland Council is investing in a climate-resilient transport system, new low-emissions ferries, and better options for all of us. But the magic happens when Aucklanders take those options and make them part of everyday life.

Landslides impact homes, infrastructure, roads and services and the effects of climate change can exacerbate these risks over time. The devastating landslides in and near Mauao, Mount Maunganui, are another stark reminder of the risk of landslides to life and property.
