Bunnings Activation Day Brings Sustainable Garden Bed to Takapuna Normal Intermediate.

Takapuna Normal Intermediate recently hosted a Bunnings Activation Day, where students, staff, and community partners gathered to build a sustainable self-wicking garden bed. This project was a highlight of the students’ International Baccalaureate (IB) exhibition, demonstrating their commitment to environmental responsibility and hands-on learning.

The garden bed, designed by the students, is intended to provide essential food sources for the school’s beehive. Self-wicking garden beds are ideal for creating sustainable green spaces, as they reduce water usage by efficiently retaining moisture, making them highly drought-resistant. This design not only supports pollinators but is also an excellent adaptation for climate resilience, as it requires minimal watering over extended breaks like school holidays, when regular garden maintenance is challenging.

The Bunnings Activation Day was more than just a garden build—it was an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and creativity in a real-world context, reinforcing valuable lessons in sustainability, ecology, and resourcefulness. Special thanks go to Belle Campbell from Takapuna Normal Intermediate, whose coordination helped bring this collaborative vision to life and Jane Frewen, Activity Organiser from Bunnings Glenfield, who generously provided the materials and expertise needed for the project. The project showcases the powerful impact of partnerships between schools, Auckland Council, and local businesses in creating long-term environmental benefits for future generations.
