Community flood resilience
Auckland Council is working with a variety of environmental community groups across the north, west and south, to restore waterways, raise flood awareness and build safer, more flood-resilient neighbourhoods.
Flooding is becoming more common and can cause a lot of damage to our homes, communities and to the enviornment. The community flood resilience programme – run through the Making Space for Water programme – is about empowering you and your communities to take the lead in preparing for future storms and protecting the places you call home.
Community Outreach
& risk reduction
Many groups in the programme are working closely with migrant and refugee communities who might have language barriers. The programme funds a whole range of activities, including things like:
- neighbourhood outreach, with some groups visiting residents door-to-door to talk about flood resilience and explore ways for people to get involved
- public workshops to improve flood literacy and catchment awareness
- stream clean-ups, stream restoration and native planting to help manage stormwater.
As well as preparing for floods, groups are actively reducing flood risk through education and local initiatives. If you’re concerned about local flooding and want to know what you can do, contact a local group in your area.
