At Home Smart Energy Living Reduce Energy Hero

Upgrade from gas to electric systems

Switching from gas to efficient electric appliances slashes emissions and power bills, and future-proofs your home, since New Zealand’s grid is mostly renewable and it’s getting cleaner.

Heat pumps are better than gas because they use far less energy to deliver the same heat, cutting costs and emissions while also providing cooling in summer. Auckland also has a goal to phase out gas heating completely by 2050.

Comparing home heating options
Method Upfront cost Annual running cost (avg.) CO2 Emissions Health & convenience
Heat pump Medium-high Low Very-low Excellent: instant, thermostat, cooling, dry heat
Piped natural gas Medium-high Medium High Good: instant thermostat, produces moisture
Modern wood burner High Low-medium Low Fair: air quality and health impacts, manual effort
Electric resistance heater Low Very high Very low Fair: can be a fire risk, dry air
Unflued gas heater Low High High Poor: releases moisture & pollutants

Heat pump water heaters use ambient heat to warm water efficiently. Pair with solar for maximum savings, but even without solar, you’ll enjoy being more resilient against increasing energy prices.

If it’s time for an upgrade, think about switching your gas stove or old electric oven to an induction cooktop. They’re up to 90% more energy efficient and can boil water faster than electric or gas alternatives.

Dishwashers, fridges and freezers, washing machines, TVs and screens – all of these use energy and the more energy efficient, the better for your pocket and for the planet.

What’s Auckland Council doing to phase out gas?

Winter Gardens in Auckland Domain

We’ve replaced the Winter Gardens gas heating system with an energy efficient pellet heater, reducing carbon emissions by 100 tonnes and cutting operational costs by $25,000 each year. The wood pellets are made in New Zealand from sawdust that would otherwise go to landfill. The ash, rich in phosphorus and nitrogen, is used as fertilizer for the gardens themselves.
