What is a HEAT kit?

A free toolkit you can borrow from Auckland Libraries to check how your home uses energy. With simple tools and step by step instructions, you can identify heat loss, measure energy use and understand what could make the biggest difference.

What’s inside a HEAT kit?

You don’t need to be an expert. Everything you need to complete a simple home energy check, including:

A hand using a digital infrared thermometer to measure the surface temperature of a home water pipe.

Infrared thermometer to find where heat is escaping from your home.

Digital hygrometer and thermometer displaying 24.6 degrees Celsius and 63 percent relative humidity.

Hygrometer to measure air temperature and humidity levels.

A plug-in digital power meter showing an energy usage reading of 1036 watts.

Power meter to measure how much electricity your appliances use.

A yellow digital sports stopwatch with the timer display resetting to zero.

Stopwatch to check how much water your shower uses.

Record booklet to keep track of what you find.

Information sheets to help you understand your results and what to do next.

How can a HEAT kit help?

A HEAT kit gives you the information you need to make smart decisions about your home.

Save money

Find where your home is losing heat, identify energy hungry appliances and discover practical ways to lower your power bills.

Make your home warmer and healthier

Spot draughts, cold areas and moisture problems that can affect comfort and contribute to condensation and mould.

Plan upgrades with confidence

Use what you learn to decide what to do first, whether that's stopping draughts, improving insulation, installing a heat pump or upgrading your hot water system.

What could you save?

Your HEAT kit helps you identify where your home uses the most energy, so you know which improvements are likely to have the biggest impact.

For many New Zealand homes, the biggest opportunities are:
  • Saving hot water, which can account for around 30% of household energy use.
  • Heating your home efficiently to reduce running costs and improve comfort.
  • Keeping warmth inside by reducing draughts and improving insulation.
  • Using appliances efficiently to cut everyday electricity use.

Your results will help you decide which actions are worth tackling first.
