One full bus can replace dozens of cars and a full train at peak hour can replace over 900 cars! Auckland’s public transport fleet is leading the way, with 180 electric buses on the roads and new low-emission ferries coming soon. By 2030, we are planning for a quarter of all our travel in Auckland to be on public transport.
ON THE MOVE
We all want getting around Auckland to be easy, safe and affordable for our whānau, good for te taiao, and part of a low-emissions resilient city we can be proud of.
Transport is nearly half of Auckland’s greenhouse gas emissions – that's massive. To climate-proof our city, we need to change the way we get around. Auckland Council is investing seriously in changing up our transport system, making it more resilient to climate change and – over time – giving you more options to get around on public transport or other active modes like walking or cycling.
Using public transport, getting involved in bike-, scooter- or car-share schemes, or using the wae wae express (walking), all helps.
Switch to public transport for more trips
Ever heard the saying, “We’re not stuck in traffic, we are the traffic”? Taking a bus, train or (electric or hybrid) ferry is sustainable and eases traffic jams.

Walk or cycle for short trips
Walking and cycling are first-rate climate actions. They’re good for our tinana and hinengaro, and if you hīkoi with others, it’s a beautiful way to express love for your place and people.

Plus, they save money on fuel and car maintenance. Many short car trips in Auckland could easily be swapped for a walk or bike ride, and e-bikes make those hills and longer distances easy. Fewer cars on local streets means safer, more welcoming neighbourhoods. And every single trip you swap cuts car exhaust emissions completely.
Use car-share or e-scooter and e-bike schemes
Jump on a shared e-bike or e-scooter, or into a shared car, and enjoy the freedom of getting around without so many traffic hassles.

Fewer cars mean less congestion, more space and lower emissions, plus most cars spend 90% of their time parked anyway. Micro-mobility makes short trips and connections to public transport easy, cheap and low carbon. Just remember to wear your helmet!
Green-up your daily commute: Go hybrid or electric
Switching to an electric or hybrid car might feel like a big step, but it’s easier, cheaper and more reliable than you think.

Average yearly running costs for EVs are about half (or less) that of petrol cars. Every switch helps Auckland move toward its goal of 40% zero-emission light vehicles by 2030, so you can enjoy driving while supporting a greener, more resilient city. Plus, EVs can use our own renewable electricity instead of imported oil – a safer solution all round.

Exploring New Zealand by car, train, bus, bike or even on foot reduces emissions, supports local tourism fuelled by manaakitanga, and helps build a resilient domestic market – so your whānau can enjoy a great getaway while making a real climate difference. Flights, whether within New Zealand or overseas, generate big carbon emissions (some enough to power 1,000 homes for a whole year), so avoiding them where possible really makes a big impact.
TOOLS AND RESOURCES
What is Auckland Council doing for transport?
Along with Auckland Transport, we have small and large initiatives on the go to reduce transport-related emissions, enhance public transport, promote sustainable mobility and make sure our transport system is resilient to climate change.
Adapting our transport system to climate change
We’re making sure all new and renewed roads, bridges, cycleways and other transport assets can withstand the impacts of climate change over their lifetime. Climate adaptation is built into every stage of Auckland Transport’s planning, construction and upkeep.
Decarbonising our own fleet
We’re building a lean, green vehicle fleet, and have invested in hundreds of EVs. The challenge is now utes and SUVs that council uses for specific purposes, but electric alternatives are coming online and we aim to have a much smaller, fully electrified fleet by 2030.
Public transport
We’re investing heavily in low-emission buses and ferries, as well as in walking and cycling infrastructure. Our new City Rail Link could ultimately take 54,000 cars off the road.
$50 for 7 days fare cap
If you travel using an Auckland Transport HOP card, you won’t spend more than $50 per 7-day period. The 7-day fare cap applies to buses, trains and inner-harbour ferries. Inner-harbour ferry services include Devonport, Bayswater, Birkenhead and Te Onewa Northcote Point.
Fareshare for Auckland businesses
Auckland businesses can now access our public transport initiative to cut costs, reduce emissions and attract talent. Employers can help their employees save 25%, 50% or 75% on public transport fares, with the discount applied directly to your HOP card. The system is easy to set up and manage and is available to businesses of all sizes.
Licensing bike and scooter share providers
We license shared bike and scooter providers, making sure they support public transport connections, improved parking and safer riding.
