Transport is nearly half of Auckland’s greenhouse gas emissions – that's massive. To climate-proof our city, we need to change the way we get around. Auckland Council is investing seriously in changing up our transport system, making it more resilient to climate change and – over time – giving you more options to get around on public transport or other active modes like walking or cycling.

Auckland’s public transport fleet is leading the way, with 180 electric buses on the roads and new low-emission ferries coming soon. Average yearly running costs for EVs are about half (or less) that of petrol cars. Every switch helps Auckland move toward its goal of 40% zero-emission light vehicles by 2030, so you can enjoy driving while supporting a greener, more resilient city. Plus, EVs can use our own renewable electricity instead of imported oil – a safer solution all round.

Flights, whether within New Zealand or overseas, generate big carbon emissions (some enough to power 1,000 homes for a whole year), so avoiding them where possible really makes a big impact.

We’re making sure all new and renewed roads, bridges, cycleways and other transport assets can withstand the impacts of climate change over their lifetime. Climate adaptation is built into every stage of Auckland Transport’s planning, construction and upkeep.
We’re building a lean, green vehicle fleet, and have invested in hundreds of EVs. The challenge is now utes and SUVs that council uses for specific purposes, but electric alternatives are coming online and we aim to have a much smaller, fully electrified fleet by 2030.
We’re investing heavily in low-emission buses and ferries, as well as in walking and cycling infrastructure. Our new City Rail Link could ultimately take 54,000 cars off the road.
If you travel using an Auckland Transport HOP card, you won’t spend more than $50 per 7-day period. The 7-day fare cap applies to buses, trains and inner-harbour ferries. Inner-harbour ferry services include Devonport, Bayswater, Birkenhead and Te Onewa Northcote Point.
Auckland businesses can now access our public transport initiative to cut costs, reduce emissions and attract talent. Employers can help their employees save 25%, 50% or 75% on public transport fares, with the discount applied directly to your HOP card. The system is easy to set up and manage and is available to businesses of all sizes.
We license shared bike and scooter providers, making sure they support public transport connections, improved parking and safer riding.
